The earldom of Leicester was created early XIIth century. It was bestowed on Robert de Beaumont, count of Meulan. Robert IV de Beaumont died in 1204. One of his two sisters, Amicie, married Simon III de Montfort.
Their son, Simon IV de Montfort was styled earl of Leicester.

Robert stemmed from the house of Beaumont (le Roger) and may be called Robert IV de Beaumont. He was son of Pernel de Grandmesnil (= fitz Pernel).
One of his two sisters and co-heiresses, Amicie married first Simon III de Montfort (father of Simon IV) then William III des Barres (father of William IV).
