September 1191, the crusading army was advancing
toward Arsouf along the seashore. The fleet was cruising nearby. Heavy cavalry
was protected by a wall of infantry. The baggage train and those of the infantry
who needed some rest were placed between the coast and the cavalry. Saladin's
army was skirmishing and shooting especially at the rear of the column in order
to pin it. The master of the Hospital had requested a massive charge because their
horses were being shot dead one by one. It was agreed that six trumpets should
be blown in three different places when the army was going to engage the Turks.
The marshal of the Hospital, and Baldwin de Carron did not wait and dashed out
at full gallop with the rest of the rear of the column. They swept away all their
opponents. Then center, at his turn, burst out of infantry line. And finally the
van charged in a third wave. The crusader victory was complete. Crusading
